Intravitreal injections deliver medicine directly inside the eye to treat conditions such as wet macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease. These treatments help protect sight, but temporary symptoms afterwards can cause concern. Understanding what to expectโ€”and which changes need urgent attentionโ€”can make recovery less worrying.

Mild redness, watering, burning or a sandy feeling are common after an injection. The antiseptic used to clean the eye, usually povidone-iodine, can irritate its sensitive surface. This does not necessarily mean you are allergic to it.

Discomfort may become noticeable as the numbing drops wear off and usually improves within 24โ€“48 hours. Preservative-free lubricating drops recommended by your eye team can help. Avoid rubbing your eye, particularly while it is still numb. Contact your clinic if symptoms persist or worsen.

You may notice a few moving spots, shadows or round bubbles after treatment. Sometimes, a tiny air bubble enters with the medicine and appears as a dark circle in your vision. These bubbles usually become smaller and disappear over the following few days.

However, a sudden increase in floaters, flashing lights, a dark curtain or worsening vision needs immediate assessment. These symptoms may indicate a retinal tear, retinal detachment or another complication. Do not assume that every new floater is harmless.

A bright red blood patch on the white of the eye can look alarming. It happens when a small surface vessel bleeds beneath the eyeโ€™s transparent covering.

This surface bleed is usually painless, does not affect vision and clears within one to two weeks. It is different from bleeding inside the eye. Blood-thinning medicines may make it more likely, but do not stop prescribed medication without medical advice. Pain or reduced vision should not be attributed to the blood patch without examination.

Occasionally, the clear front surface of the eye develops a small scratch. This can cause sharp pain, excessive watering, light sensitivity and difficulty opening the eye, often after the anaesthetic wears off.

Contact your eye clinic promptly. An examination is needed because a scratch and more serious complications can produce similar symptoms. Treatment may include lubricants and prescribed antibiotic drops or ointment. Many small scratches heal within 24โ€“48 hours. Never use leftover anaesthetic eye drops at home; repeated use can damage the cornea.

Infection inside the eye, called endophthalmitis, is rare but can permanently damage sight. Warning signs include worsening vision, increasing pain or redness, marked light sensitivity and increasing floaters.

You do not need to have every symptom. Reduced vision requires urgent attention even without severe pain.

Contact your treating clinic immediately. If it is unavailable, attend an emergency eye service or emergency department. Do not wait until your next appointment. Treatment usually requires antibiotics injected into the eye; some patients need surgery. Ordinary antibiotic drops alone are insufficient for this deep infection.

Follow your clinicโ€™s aftercare instructions, use medicines as directed and keep emergency contact details accessible. Mild symptoms should improve; worsening symptoms deserve prompt professional attention.
