Diabetic Retinopathy-Mild Disease

Most patients with diabetic retinopathy will develop some form of eye changes secondary to diabetes. The eye changes secondary to diabetes are called diabetic retinopathy. The risk factors for developing diabetic retinopathy  are:

1. Poor control of diabetes (measured by HBA1c level)
2. Duration of diabetes (irrespective of control)
3. Smoking
4. High blood pressure
5. Anaemia
6. High cholesterol levels

Stages of Diabetic Retinopathy

Stage 0= No  disease

Stage 1= Mild Non-Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (NPDR)

Stage  2= Moderate NPDR

Stage  3= Severe NPDR

Stage 4= Proliferative Diabetic  Retinopathy

Stage 5= Advanced Diabetic Eye Disease
